Taíno people are the Indigenous guardians of Borikén and the wider Caribbean, a nation whose language, culture, and life-ways still breathe through more than 186,000 people registered in the U.S. Census across Puerto Rico and its diasporas today. We are the descendants of Arawakan-speaking communities who built sophisticated agricultural societies, carved sacred symbols into stone, and navigated the Caribbean with canoas long before European arrival. Our world was shaken by colonization, disease, and forced assimilation, but their identity, traditions, and communities never vanished—despite centuries of outsiders claiming otherwise. Today, Taíno families, organizations, and cultural leaders actively reclaim ceremony, language, and history, proving that our Taino story is very much alive and still being written.
